Character Personality:
Izuru is generally pretty miserable. It’s definitely his most obvious trait. He doesn’t believe in fighting, but he knows he must, and knows he must kill his opponents – and he is prepared to be the one killed should he lose. He hadn’t yet realized what it was all about when he decided to become a shinigami, but starting from the time when his class was attacked and he saw several students killed, his attitude and view changed. While he used to be confident and self-important, though still somewhat introverted, he became very withdrawn, negative, depressive and in his own mind, worthless. It’s really very similar to someone thinking it would be exciting to be in the army, then realizing ‘the horrors of war’ once they’re sent out. Or, rather, it’s exactly the same. He thought it would be fun and exciting, and a noble cause, until he witnessed others dying and was put in real danger himself. After Ichimaru turned traitor he realized he didn’t even know what he was fighting for, what side he was on, or which one was right. He did always fight to save others, but he doesn’t even know if he’s doing that much of the time, and so quite a bit of it is duty. For a long time he believed his only talents were following orders and being completely loyal to his captain, Ichimaru was what he believed in. He later comes to a more solid conclusion and view that works for him and is even a little more confident and has more self-worth, but at the time I’m taking him from he is still wavering, though he’s starting to find what is right for him.

Wabisuke, his sword, is often translated as ‘the penitent one’, though 侘 means ‘the beauty to be found in poverty and simplicity’ when in noun form (wabi), or ‘miserable, wretched, lonely, dreary, comfortless’ when in adjective form (wabishii) and 助 (suke) means assistance. You can take this to mean saving someone from being miserable, or assisting them in furthering it. Though, there is a knifegame that uses this, along the lines of Russian Roulette as it was said to be played by soldiers who lost the will to live. The player says ‘wabisuke’ as he uses his sword in a slicing motion across his wrist (or another possibly fatal body part?), in this context meaning ‘save me from my wretchedness’. Kira beheads his opponents after they fall from their weapon’s or their own weight, which he describes as resembling someone praying or begging forgiveness (for their sins (wretchedness)). So, even the optimistic possibility of salvation would seem to imply being freed through death. This is something that has a great effect on him, he doesn’t want to die or he would have let himself be killed, but the thought behind it, being the executioner or the one to pass judgement on someone who is on their knees, praying and awaiting death. Had his sword served any other purpose or held any other meaning, he may have gotten over his worries and fears, or at least had a healthy amount of doubt and guilt, but instead he is completely built up to be miserable and ‘wretched’. Each shinigami’s sword has a soul, and they are quite often shown speaking to their masters, Kira wouldn’t be an exception to this. His is never seen in the manga as of yet, but in the anime it spoke of wanting to kill him. Which isn’t surprising in the least. Because of this, and the meaning and origin of the name along with Kira’s mental and emotional state, I believe when Wabisuke speaks to him, it tells him how terrible he is, that he really should feel guilty, it perpetuates his self-loathing and his anxiety.

He has quite a few friends, mostly other vice-captains, but he would much rather sit at home alone than go out with them or even visit with just one. Though he fears his own thoughts, he doesn’t feel as close to them as he should. He shows many signs of depression and/or anxiety, and it’s difficult to properly describe how he arrives at certain conclusions or a line of thought because of it, but taking disinterest in being with friends as an example, for many people with depression/anxiety, it takes too much energy, it’s just a bit outside their comfort level, or they just don’t want to even though they may know it could cheer them up to be with friends. Izuru even tries to deny himself things that may be of some comfort at times because he believes he deserves to be miserable. However, when he does go with them, he usually ends up drunk and loudly complains about anyone or anything that has bothered him recently (especially Ichimaru). Because he’s easily annoyed, but is too polite (and self-hating) to say it normally, it all comes out then. It’s a bit of a throwback to before he became a shinigami, when he was cocky and confident. He didn’t have a problem telling people off then, but he can’t do that anymore – unless he’s drinking and his tongue is loose. It even reveals that he sometimes has a superior attitude even now, despite how much he hates himself, there’s still a part of him that’s cocky, even if it’s dying and rarely seen.

Because Kira is very polite and reserved, he calls people by their last names, or by a title, always. Even those who are closest to him are on a family name basis, and he doesn’t like being called by his given name either. Ichimaru is the only one who can get away with that. This is because he doesn’t feel he can be entirely open with anyone and so he doesn’t think anyone could feel close enough to him to use his given name or for him to use theirs. That is partially a symptom of anxiety/depression and partially his reserved nature.

Though he sees fighting so negatively and it brings him so much grief, he is still determined and won’t back down from his duty (even if he had that option). He is polite and friendly and generally genuinely concerned for others, so he can’t abandon his squad (going so far as to attempt to take charge and act as captain despite it being far outside his comfort zone and perceived ability), friends, humans or departed souls who may need his help. He wants to be reliable, courageous, someone others can look up to or call on for help, and to do the right thing, he just doesn’t believe he is good enough to be or do any of those things, but if he would take a step back and ignore his own worries, he would see that he really is; simply because he wants and tries to be.

Character Abilities:
Kira is quite intelligent, which is proven by his rank and through graduating from the shinigami academy at the top of the ‘elite’ class. His personality reflects it as well, in that he is a thinker, and his hobby of writing haiku. He also is able to think on his feet in battle, which relates to his fighting ability as well. Kira is determined and skilled in battle, he will win or die trying, completely literally. He is skilled both with his sword and with spell-type attacks – he was shown to be the only one who could use those properly for quite a while in the academy, getting it spot-on in the first try (something he was very proud of). One of his more notable, specific battle-related talents is speed, not just on foot but in moving his sword. Due to its nature, it’s basically a requirement. His squad seems to specialize in something along the lines of ‘quick kill’, but he did have a short time in the medical squad and so is familiar with (and actually still very talented in, despite his modesty) healing skills and items.

While he isn’t the most inspiring leader, he does at least know how to take control of a situation himself, and will at least try to be a leader if he must. When he puts his mind to it, he can, but mostly for his good planning rather than real leadership skills.

Character Weaknesses:
Honestly, he has more weaknesses than strengths. Though Kira is intelligent and physically quite strong/skilled, he himself is far from it.
On a battle level, his main weakness is that his sword’s abilities are quite limited. If it is released, he can’t very well cut his opponent, of course in that state it serves other purposes, but it’s difficult to defend like that and while other shinigami have swords that can become long range, his is strictly for close combat...or even simply biding time. And while others can choose to leave their opponents wounded, he is nearly forced to ultimately behead them. This is a great source of despair for him and is a large part of his grim mentality. Which is his second biggest weakness.

He blames himself for everything, whether it is really his fault or not, prays that he will not be forgiven for killing others in battle, worries constantly and truly thinks he is a terrible person. He has a lot of self-loathing and one of his greatest fears is just being alone with himself. When he is in particularly great distress and self-hatred, he will end up causing himself harm. Not exactly deliberately, but it’s implied that he will do things such as repeatedly throwing/hitting/scratching an object, or the wall or floor, he may dig his nails into his own arm, pull his hair and anything else along those lines. It’s not a conscious decision to hurt himself, it’s just the result of the way he deals with what is likely a severe panic attack.

His biggest weakness is trust and loyalty. But it’s not that he’s naïve or easily trusts others without reason, or that he refuses to trust anyone, this really only applies to Ichimaru. Because he idolized Ichimaru during his school days, it was easy for him to be convinced to trust Ichimaru completely. He could be manipulated to do anything, he would never question it and if he thought to, he would convince himself it was fine, because it was an order from Gin, who could do no wrong and knew what was best. After Ichimaru, his second priority is his friends, so when Ichimaru’s interests conflict with theirs, he is caught in a difficult position, believing both parties to be in the right. His loyalty and concern for his friends, and for people in general, can also be used against him, especially by Ichimaru. When Ichimaru turned out to be a traitor, Kira’s trust was shattered, but he agreed to help to keep his friends safe. But, he still finds it difficult to say exactly where his loyalties lie in that. Had he been asked or told to follow, he almost definitely would have done it. So, maybe it’s better to say Kira’s greatest weakness is Ichimaru and his deceptive ways.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?

The basics. He won’t be able to do anything too irregular outside of weapon form. If he were the one to be wielding a (regular) sword for some reason, he would still be quite good at it, and he will still be intelligent and have good reflexes, but anything enhanced by the supernatural would only remain in weapon form, as detailed below.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
They’ll mostly stay the same, he will be relieved to not have to be the leader. However, his despair over his sword’s nature will either be perpetuated or relieved when he is the sword. It’s hard to say which, much more likely perpetuated, but if it plays out just right, he may find a way to better cope with it.

Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.

His agenda mostly lies in helping Ichimaru.
Mostly CR things, he’s not the type to do too much nosing around or to try to get anything much going, though he wants to prove he can be a leader, he’s much more comfortable following.

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon:
He’s used to taking orders, he wants to. And while the meister and weapon are an equal part, the implication of a weapon is that they are used and controlled. This is what he feels he is meant to do, and Kira has certainly been used and controlled in the past.

What is your character's Weapon form?:
His canon weapon, a katana called Wabisuke, in its released form which looks something like a square hook.
This suits him not only for the fact that it’s his personal canon weapon, but that it symbolizes the source of and even causes his suffering.
Its only true ability is doubling the weight of whatever it hits, each time it hits. 1 lb becomes 2, 2 becomes 4, 4 becomes 8, etc. This slows the opponent down as their weight rapidly increases, or makes it very difficult for them to lift their weapon as its weight increases. Ultimately, the idea is that they will be unable to move from the sheer weight of their own limbs or cannot attack as their weapon cannot be lifted. Using it will take up some energy, but not a great deal as it’s generally a constant, otherwise the sword is almost useless because of its shape. In addition, the effects will fade, it must be continuously used to make up for what is being lost.
To aid this, Kira himself is quite agile and swings his sword multiple times in the blink of an eye, but in this case, quite a bit of that will rely on the meister, his own current level of ability and their resonance.
And the true purpose of this ability and the sword itself is for the sword’s hook to be used like a reverse guillotine, pulling up rather than down.

Kira is skilled at magic-type attacks, called ‘kido’ in canon, in particular one he uses often, called ‘shakkahou’, a small ball of Soul Wavelength that creates something of an explosion on impact – all relative to its size, of course. Because of this, in weapon form he will be able to expel such an attack, but this will take up energy. Its strength will vary based on resonance and his own strength. It may be a bit stronger at the cost of more energy. Even in canon, he mostly uses such skills to give himself some way to attack now and then as his sword is almost entirely defense based until the last moment of the fight.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: Miserable, loyal, serious, pessimistic, striving, kind

Soul Appearance:
It’s small, a pale, murky yellow that is clearly an attempt at a nice, bright shade, but is just a little too grey. The shape is simply a ball with two soft, rounded upwards points coming out the back like his own hair. The expression is http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/691/izurutaichou5.jpg/

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person:

[As the feed starts up, a young man can be seen, frowning slightly, it almost seems like he’s pouting, the way his eyebrows are turned up. Though, truth be told, they’re naturally like that…]

…If we take a job, we don’t have to fight…right? It seems pointless, the only thing to gain is power, which is nothing to fight for. Unless I’m wrong about the purpose, which I hope I am. Either way, would anyone happen to know of an opening as a…secretary, perhaps? An office job of some sort.

[He sighs as he goes to switch the camera off – ‘secretary’ wasn’t a good way to put it, he’s going to be teased for that, isn’t he?]

Third Person:
Izuru had been running around in an attempt to keep the squad in order all day, which was tiring in and of itself, some members were taxing on his nerves, but after being forced out of his rooms to drink with Hiisagi and Matsumoto the night before, it had been nearly impossible to keep up. So, it was no surprise when he fell asleep at his desk after finally sitting down to paperwork (though he certainly didn’t intend or want to, there was work to be done).
However, when he woke, the last thing he expected was to be standing in such a dark room, which seemed to have been nearly destroyed. It wasn’t an entirely unfamiliar setting, but he knew he had been in the office a moment ago.
He found himself wondering if his former captain could have anything to do with it, briefly. In thinking that, Kira’s first instinct was to draw his sword, but when he found he was without it, he was almost relieved. This place couldn’t be so bad if he wasn’t called there to fight.

He felt somewhat peaceful, standing there, until he noticed a screen flickering to life…
